The Chasen (Bamboo Whisk)
The Chasen or the Bamboo Whisk is what is traditionally used to whisk in matcha and is the best option for when you want to achieve that perfect layer of microfoam with your matcha drink. This is typically harder to find and could be pricier than a handheld frother. In addition to this, there is a learning curve to the Chasen, wherein you would have to whisk in a W or M motion continuously to reap the perfect results. Despite these cons, however, the results are worth it, as it creates a smoother texture to the matcha and again creates that perfect layer of microfoam on top.

The Frother
The handheld frother is the best alternative for when the Chasen is not available to you. This option is typically easier to find, at good prices, and easy to use. However it does not give the same results as with the Chasen, creating bigger bubbles and a texture that's not as smooth. In addition to this, it could be messier with the unpredictability of the machine. Even with that in mind, it is still a great option for when you're in a pinch or when that's all that is available to you.
Which one should you pick?
The best way to achieve great results would be the Chasen. The quality of matcha is typically judged in its appearance and how well it is prepared, and what better way to go than the traditional route. The Chasen provides a window into the culture of preparing matcha while also providing you a good quality cup of Matcha.
Even with the Chasen being the best option, it all still boils down to what is available to you and what you are willing to invest your money in. Either way both create a good cup of matcha, great for your daily matcha fix.
