What is a Chasen?

The Chasen is a whisk traditionally used to whisk up Matcha. The Chasen is typically made from a single piece of bamboo that is hand crafted to contain multiple delicate prongs, this shape then allows for easy whisking and frothing of the Matcha drink.

Tips on how to take care of your Chasen

Like many tools, the Chasen has different ways to stay as pristine as the day you first got it. This blog features some of the most important things to note when it comes to taking care of your Chasen.

Soak the Chasen before use

By soaking the Chasen in hot water for 10-20 minutes, it allows for the prongs to soften. Chasen owners must do this as the prongs of the Chasen are brittle once dry, making it prone to breaking during the process of whisking a cup of Matcha. The process of soaking the tool prevents the prongs of the Chasen to break and overtime prolongs the life of said tool.

Wash with plain water

Once you are finished using the Chasen, it is best to simply pour plain water over the tool to clean it. As much as possible, one must avoid using soapy water as it may affect the porous structure of the bamboo material. This ensures that the Chasen is kept clean while also avoiding any additional damages.

Let the Chasen Air dry

After washing the Chasen with water it is best to simply leave it to air dry before its next use. By doing this you are able to avoid any unwanted mould to form on the Chasen and it further prolongs its quality.

Store on a Chasen-tate (Whisk Holder)

When leaving the Chasen to dry and rest before the next use it is best to keep it on a Chasen Holder. The holder is not just used for aesthetics as it also helps keep the shape and form of the Bamboo Whisk. This keeps the prongs safe ensuring that no damage is inflicted onto the tool while not in use.

Monitor the state of the Chasen often

Lastly, it is important for you to constantly monitor the state of your Chasen. A Chasen must be periodically replaced as constant use can lead to natural wear and tear or even the unwanted mold. By constantly assessing the state of the Chasen, you are able to determine if it is time to retire your current Chasen and replace it with a brand new one.

Keeping these tips in mind can help further the life of your Chasen, helping you achieve high quality cafe-like Matcha drinks every single time.
